Ultrasonic B-Scan Imaging

Ultrasonic B-Scan imaging is an ultrasonic system that allows for profile imaging of the component. The system, in the most basic terms, is one which utilizes a gated ultrasonic instrument and transforms the data collected into the profile image.

Typically this system offers several advantages over the standard ultrasonic thickness measurement including speed, ability to obtain hard copy records and the ability to maintain a screen image that represents a length of inspection area, thereby reducing the operator error that can occur with a normal A-Scan thickness examination.

PetroChem Inspection Services has provided B-Scan ultrasonic imaging for many different clients and applications. We currently use the Panametrics Epoch 4B which interfaces with standard desktop computers. The software allows digital thickness data to be sorted by a variety of thickness variables including minimum, maximum, and pre-set alarm levels.
